General Information (24 units total)

The Doctor of Theology (Th.D.) in Biblical Theology - Second Doctoral Privilege is a unique degree program specifically designed for doctoral graduates of Master's International School of Divinity who are interested in deepening their knowledge and mastery of the study of Biblical Theology through an alternative advanced research degree program.

Few other religious degrees are as widely respected as the Doctor of Theology (Th.D.).  In the past, the Th.D. was generally held to be the degree of choice for those whose ultimate goal was to teach at the senior level.  While this is still true in some academic circles, in recent years the largely academic oriented Th.D. has become associated with an increasing emphasis on the transfer of theoretical Theology to the practical realm where Theology and people merge.  This is the goal of this Doctor of Theology degree program.

Master's Theological Research Institute has developed a reading and research oriented Th.D. program exclusively for doctoral graduates of Master's International School of Divinity.  This alternative program focuses on the specific application of contemporary Theology.  The MTRI Th.D. program directs the student through a series of Biblical Theology reading components designed to develop, deepen, confirm and expand the advanced student's understanding of Systematic Theology, culminating in the student selecting a single area of personal interest around which a dissertation is constructed.

Entrance and Prerequisite Degree Requirements:

The applicant for this exclusive Th.D. in Biblical Theology program will have met one of the following qualifications:

  • Have earned from MISD one of the following degrees:  Doctor of Practical Ministry, Doctor of Practical Theology, Doctor of Biblical Studies, or the Doctor of Ministry.

  • Graduates of MISD who have earned the Doctor of Divinity may qualify providing they have also earned (from MISD or an acceptable institution) a Biblically oriented master's degree.

Program Completion Requirements

This exclusive Doctor of Theology program is divided into two distinct "Components."  In order to complete each of these two Components, the student will be given full access to Master's Online Digital Library, will be required to make use of the Internet for additional research, and will be required to use approved software necessary for the completion of the Dissertation Component.  Just as in the case of the MISD doctorate already earned, the Th.D. program is self-paced.  Therefore, the doctoral student may proceed at a pace that compliments his or her lifestyle.  However, steady progress will be encouraged throughout the program.  Because the individual accepted into this program is a proven doctoral graduate, he or she should be able to complete the program in about one and a half to two years, though the initial registration period is for five years.

Program Components

COMPONENT #1 (4 Units)

COMPONENT #2 (20 Units)

COMPARATIVE READING & ANALYSIS
THD-906

Component Purpose: To provide the Doctor of Theology student with an opportunity to compare and contrast the primary twin streams of protestant theology through the writings of two widely respected third generation theologians - one representing Arminianism and the other Calvinism.

Component Objectives: The theologically advanced student will have demonstrated an understanding of the primary contributions of  Arminianism and Calvinism to the development of contemporary Protestant Theology. As a result, the writing of the dissertation will be sufficiently informed so as to help ensure a well-reasoned and theologically balanced approach.

Completion Process:  This component is completed through guided reading and writing rather than traditional coursework.  The process is accomplished in three steps:

  1. *Reading Christian Theology, by Henry Orton Wiley.

  2. *Reading Systematic Theology, by Lewis Sperry Chafer.

  3. Completing a comparative analysis of twelve primary units of Protestant Theology, thereby demonstrating both concurrences and differences between Arminianism and Calvinism.

* Total estimated cost of these textbooks is between $100 -$150 per complete set.  That is, $200 - $300 for both sets combined).

DISSERTATION
THD-907

The completion of the dissertation will require the use of MTRI approved software designed to allow the student to complete this Component in a form and style generally acceptable within the context of higher education.

The dissertation subject is selected by the student, and the process of writing is supervised by a three-member Th.D. committee, and chaired by a senior faculty member.  The process will require the following steps:

  1. Submission of the topic (question), scope of the project, and research method.

  2. Submission of the outline, first chapter, and bibliography.

  3. Submission of the first rough draft.

  4. Submission of the final rough draft.

  5. Oral defense.

  6. Submission of the final draft.

  7. Binding and Publication.

Upon the successful completion of all of of the Components, the student will be graduated and awarded the Doctor of Theology degree.

Completion Process:  The dissertation is completed through guided reading, research and writing as is typical for all doctoral dissertations.

Tuition and Fee Payment Schedule

Total tuition is $2,880 ($120 per unit).   Required  fees are the graduation fee of $200 which is not paid until near the completion of the program, and the thesis/dissertation binding fee ($35 - $50 per copy) which is not due until the submission of the approved final draft.

There are two tuition payments schedules to choose from:

  • OPTION # 1:

  • $480 initial down payment.

  • The remaining tuition balance of $2,400 is to be paid in 24 monthly installments of $100 on the 21st of each month.  The first payment is due the month following the payment of the initial $480 tuition installment.

  • There is no interest charged for the monthly payment option.

  • OPTION # 2:

  • $1,200 initial down payment.

  • A final payment of $1,200 due six months after the initial down payment.

  • There is a $480 discount for this payment option.  In the event the student is not able to make the final $1,200 payment at six month, the remaining balance may be divided into 18 monthly payments of $93.  The $480 discount is forfeited, but there will be no interest charged on the monthly payment option.

IMPORTANT:

  •    If after enrollment, due to unforeseen circumstances, the student is unable to continue making tuition payments, he or she may seek relief in the form of adjusted monthly payments.  However, if the student should find he or she is unable to continue making tuition payments, the student may request withdrawal (or to place the program on hold), and will not be obligated to continue making tuition payments.

  •     All tuition paid is vested for a period of ten (10) years from the date of the initial program registration, (with the exception of that which is consumed by the completion of component work), and remains as a tuition reserve on the student’s record during that period of time.  Unconsumed tuition balances are considered to be in the student’s TUITION RESERVE ACCOUNT, and remain vested for ten (10) years from the date of the student’s initial program registration.  After ten years, the balance in the student’s Tuition Reserve Account is forfeited, although at the discretion of the Institution may be reinstated in the case of special circumstance.    Due to the unique pricing structure of this degree program, there are no tuition refund provisions.
